The Optimal Phrasing for an Engraved Plaque

When it comes to award ceremonies, whether it is for a children’s sports team or for a company-wide banquet, you want to make sure the awards get the right message across to the recipients. A lot of this comes down to the words you choose to engrave on the award. To help you put together the best awards ceremony possible, here are a few tips on how to perfectly phrase an engraved plaque:

  1. Show that you put thought and effort into it.

Most of all, you want the phrasing on the plaque to show that you have put much effort into carefully choosing the perfect words. Start by considering exactly what it is the plaque is supposed to commemorate and why it is important to the recipient. The thought you put into it will show through and make the award even more special to the recipient.

  1. Keep an air of simplicity.

No matter how formal the ceremony is, you should not use excessively formal words on the plaqueDoing so can make the plaque seem insincere and possibly even difficult to understand. You need to have a balance between officiality and genuineness. While the words should not sound casual and informal, they should not be so formal that a lack of personal touch develops.

Keep in mind that this optimal balance will also depend on the type of ceremony that the plaque will be presented at. An end-of-season soccer team celebration will differ much from a corporate awards ceremony.

  1. Stay Relevant

The plaque you give away should commemorate a specific accomplishment. Be careful of using too many generalized words. For example, do not write something like, “In Recognition of Excellence.” Instead, think about what exactly the recipient did that is so “excellent.” Making the wording specific rather than generalized will make it much more meaningful to the recipient.

As a last little piece of advice, we cannot exaggerate how important it is to proofread your words many times over. We would hate for you to come up with the perfect phrasing, only to realize a spelling error in the recipient’s name on the night of the ceremony. So, follow each of these tips, proofread, proofread again, and you will have a wonderful plaque on your hands!
