One popular event that requires trophies in
Miami, FL is the Pinewood Derby. This is a Cub Scout racing event where
the Cub Scouts make small cars, typically from kits containing a piece of pine,
4 plastic tires and 4 nails to use as the axles of the wheels. The sizing of
the wood is only permitted to be 7 inches long or less and 2 ¾ inches wide. The
car, once finished, may only weigh 5 ounces or less. Troops can always vary
these guidelines, but these are the general ones.
The Pinewood Derby was started in the 1950’s in the city of
California. The Derby was originally similar to a soap box derby race for
younger cub scouts. Like those cars, pinewood cars use gravity for power but
are smaller and easier to build. These run on tracks inside so the events can
be held during the winter as well. Through the years, soap box derby’s have
decreased, primarily because the soap boxes aren’t as available, and the
pinewood derbies are more popular.
Each of the cub scouts gets to design, carve, assemble and
paint the cars. This requires planning and a strategy. Some car designs have an
advantage on the slope and others have an advantage on the straightaway. Some
lanes may be in better condition than others also. The popularity has caused
events such as Powder Puff Derby for the girls and the Raingutter Regata for
curved sail boats. These events require trophies and awards from an awards store
in Miami, FL.
